Marsai Martin, Jay-Z, George Clinton & Sinbad Tell The Story Of Rudy Love @ the Hip Hop Film Festival
Who is Rudy Love? A new documentary entitled “This Is Love” chronicles the story of Rudy Love, a polarizing figure in Black music. The documentary is a searing look into the world of the music business; how it can decimate, co-opt and appropriate the intellectual property of the most talented, leaving them with nothing.
The movie is a look into the “quintessential struggle of African American artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.”
“His voice has been influencing us for decades, whether we know it or not…” says the director john Alexander. Alexander leaves no stone unturned in this ousting.. bringing in legends such as Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood, George Clinton & Sinbad. Their co-sign allows the viewer to understand just how important Rudy Love’s contribution is to the culture….a contribution important enough for Michael Jackson to allegedly rip-off his entire catalogue. It appears Quincy Jones was not lying when he told the world about Michael Jackson buying “obscure artists” entire catalogues and putting them out as his own… so yea.. there’s that.
Rudy Love says it is family and love that got him through, and made him want to keep creating, as opposed to being bitter. The fruits of his labor is apparent in his music that still lives, thanks to Jay-Z, and a grounded legacy that now even extends to Hollywood with his niece Marsai Martin making strides and putting all her youthful weight behind stories for the culture, including this documentary about her own family.
