Hip Hop Culture, particularly rap music, is widely stereotyped to be extremely misogynistic and a place where women are relegated to either sex objects or silent bystanders — basically the real life version of Gilead from The Handmaid’s Tale….until now.

The Hip Hop Film Festival has proven to be a place where anyone can shine, regardless of gender, in a forum that stays true to the culture. Only the best can rock a screen at this award winning international festival, where the winners and nominees enjoy access to major distribution deals, world class networking and support from the Harlem Film House, the 501(c)(3) that produces the festival and is dedicated to the careers of storytellers from the culture.

It has also proven to be the one place where women in the culture can shine and tell their stories unapologetically without the burden of sex or casting couches. Where they can define how their characters interact, where they decide who gets roles, and most importantly, where they determine how women of color are represented.

The Hip Hop Film Festival itself is founded CR Capers, a woman of color, who created the festival and it’s parent organization to address the Hollywood propaganda machine in a real way. “I am constantly seeing all these diversity “programs”at networks and hashtag campaigns. As a woman in this business, I can tell you it is STILL business as usual.. and until we begin creating blue oceans like what we have done with the Hip Hop Film Festival, the story will continue to remain the same.”

Below is a comprehensive list of all the woman-led projects premiering at the Festival this year. To see more about the films, watch trailers, learn about the directors and more, choose a title from the list below and then look it upon the Hip Hop FIlm Festival Index HERE.

The Hip Hop Film Festival takes place August 1 — August 4th at the National Black Theatre in NYC.
